Google Signs Agreement to Purchase Energy from Kairos Power’s SMRs

In a significant move to support the clean energy transition in the U.S., Google has signed an agreement to purchase nuclear energy from small modular reactors (SMRs) being developed by Kairos Power. This marks the first corporate deal of its kind, aimed at powering Google’s operations with 24/7 carbon-free energy.

The agreement will help bring Kairos Power's first SMR online by 2030, with plans for additional reactors by 2035. Together, these SMRs will provide up to 500 MW of clean, reliable power to U.S. grids, supporting the increasing energy demands of advanced technologies like AI, while contributing to national decarbonization efforts.

Kairos Power’s SMRs utilize molten-salt cooling technology combined with pebble-type fuel, enabling a more efficient and safe energy generation process. This low-pressure system reduces complexity and lowers construction costs, making nuclear energy more accessible. Kairos Power is also adopting an iterative development process to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness as it advances toward commercial deployment.
