Macron Calls for Dialogue on European Nuclear Defense
French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed readiness toengage in discussions regarding the utilization of French nuclear warheads as acomponent of a "credible European defense" against potential threatsfrom Russia.
In an interview with regional outlets from the Ebra pressgroup, Macron voiced support for initiating this dialogue, emphasizing theinclusion of aspects such as missile defense, long-range weapons deployment, and nuclear armament for nations possessing such capabilities or hostingAmerican nuclear weapons.
While affirming France's unique position, Macron signaled awillingness to enhance contributions to the defense of European territory.
France, holding approximately 300 nuclear warheads, standsas the sole nuclear power within the European Union.
Macron's recent assertive stance against Russia, particularly in response to its invasion of Ukraine, underscores the urgency ofexploring strategic defense measures. This proposal isn't entirely novel;Macron previously broached the subject in 2020, advocating for a"strategic dialogue" on the role of France's nuclear deterrent inEurope's collective security. Despite extending the offer again in 2022,Germany, hosting U.S. nuclear weapons, has yet to engage in substantivediscussions on the matter.
However, there are voices within Europe, such as ManfredWeber, leader of the center-right European People's Party (EPP), who advocatefor embracing Macron's proposition. Weber views the development of a Europeannuclear defense dimension as a crucial long-term objective, urging thecontinent to seriously consider Macron's offer in light of current geopoliticalchallenges.
